Hiring a Paint Contractor
What are some reasons for hiring a painting contractor?
Are you planning to paint your home and it seems like an incredible amount of work? Have you ever wondered how on earth you were going to prep and paint the windows outside at 20 feet high? These are but a few of the reasons to seek a professional paint contractor and start asking questions. Questions are a good thing in this business, and most paint contractors will be happy to answer any you may have, so don’t be afraid to ask (I will list a few questions further on).
Here are a few reasons why it may be in your best interest to hire a painting contractor:
- Time – Most people do not have the time to paint these days, a painting contractor will save your time, and stress.
- Knowledge – Large-scale paint jobs require the proper knowledge, a reputable painting contractor will have that.
- Heights & Safety – Most people get squeamish climbing up ladders, a painting contractor will have all of the proper gear & certifications to paint those hard to reach places.
- Physical Ability – Painting is hard work, and requires hours of labour. A painting contractor
- Paint Experience – The average homeowner typically has a limited amount of paint experience, another reason to seek a painting contractor, who should have plenty of experienced employees able to accomplish any project.

Is there a difference between a painter and a painting contractor?
Yes, there is. We are not speaking ill of painters in any regard. We hold the highest respect for our trade and all painters worldwide. However, when hiring a professional for a large-scale project, it is the differences between a painter and a painting contractor that is going to ultimately decide how the job gets organized and completed. There are pros and cons to both, however, when dealing with a larger paint project with many details and a deadline, it is best to hire a painting contractor. Many solo painters will come with years of experience and great customer service that can benefit smaller projects or budgets, but when a project requires multiple painters on-site to meet deadlines or expectations, a painting contractor is going to have the proper resources and knowledge to complete the task in a timely and professional manner. Painting contractors may cost more than a solo painter, however, their services are guaranteed and should come with the proper liability insurance, warranties, and the proper WSIB coverage for all employees. This decreases any potential problems that could arise from injury or property damage.
What are some questions to ask a painting contractor?
As I stated above, it is always recommended to ask a painting contractor as many questions as possible – we welcome these. The right answers can provide a client with peace of mind and ultimately help them make a decision on which painting contractor to hire. Remember; good painting contractors come at a price, and their services should come highly recommended. It’s always good to call some references if possible.
Some questions to ask a painting contractor are:
- Insurance: Do they have WSIB & liability insurance and can they provide a certificate or clearance alongside an estimate?
- References: Can they provide any legitimate references?
- Cost/Pricing: Is their pricing detailed? Do they provide a pricing package and not just a number?
- Employees: How many employees will be on-site? Are they all covered under WSIB? Is there a site manager onsite?
- Deadlines/Scheduling: Will they provide an approximate timeline for the project? How often are you on or behind schedule?
- Paint Products: What paint products will they be using? Painting contractors should be supplying all of the material in order to guarantee their work and warranty.
- Warranty/Contracts: Do they have a warranty on their work? Do they have payment terms & conditions or contract?
